The race to become the next James Bond has taken an unexpected turn, with Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult reportedly emerging as late contenders for the iconic 007 role. Both British actors are said to have participated in screen tests for the upcoming Bond film, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve. Their reported involvement adds two major Hollywood names to a casting process that was already attracting considerable attention.
According to Variety and TheWrap, Pattinson and Hoult joined previously reported candidates Jack Lowden, Josh O’Connor and Callum Turner in the competition. The development is particularly interesting because the casting search was believed to be narrowing down, with speculation surrounding a possible announcement growing in recent weeks.
Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult Enter the 007 Race
Pattinson’s reported screen test is a significant development given his established position in Hollywood. The actor currently plays Bruce Wayne in DC’s The Batman franchise and previously became a global star through the Twilight films. He also has a connection with Villeneuve, having appeared in the filmmaker’s upcoming science-fiction epic Dune: Part Three.
Hoult brings a different kind of franchise experience to the competition. He portrayed Beast in the X-Men prequel films and recently appeared as Lex Luthor in DC’s Superman. Interestingly, Hoult was also among the actors considered for Batman before Pattinson eventually secured the role in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film.
Their reported involvement could make the final decision more complicated for the producers. Both actors have experience carrying major studio productions, but playing James Bond would introduce an entirely different set of expectations and potentially a long-term commitment.
Five Actors Reportedly Screen-Tested for James Bond
Pattinson and Hoult join three other names who have been repeatedly linked to the role: Jack Lowden, Josh O’Connor and Callum Turner. According to the reports, the final screen-testing group included five actors, although the identity of the last addition and the precise selection process have not been officially confirmed.
Variety has also reported that Harry Styles has held discussions about the part, while Theo James has not been ruled out of the wider conversation. These reports do not establish that either actor participated in the same final screen tests.
The competition has attracted attention from former Bond stars and Hollywood figures. Pierce Brosnan has expressed support for Turner, while Gary Oldman has backed his Slow Horses co-star Lowden. However, neither endorsement indicates who the studio will ultimately select.
Denis Villeneuve and Steven Knight Lead Bond 26
Amazon MGM Studios has appointed Denis Villeneuve to direct the 26th James Bond film, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are overseeing the project as the franchise moves into a new phase following Daniel Craig’s departure.
Craig last appeared as 007 in No Time to Die (2021), concluding a five-film run that began with Casino Royale in 2006. Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment on the latest casting reports.
For now, Pattinson and Hoult remain reported contenders rather than confirmed favourites. With several established actors competing for one of cinema’s most recognisable roles, the announcement of Daniel Craig’s successor could become one of Hollywood’s biggest casting moments.
