Dune: Part Three Runtime Revealed as Trilogy’s Shortest

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three is set to bring his science-fiction trilogy to a close with a slightly shorter cinematic journey than its predecessors. The film’s runtime has been listed at approximately two hours and 30 minutes, making it the shortest instalment in the series starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides.

The Irish Film Classification Office lists the film at 150 minutes and seven seconds, while AMC’s listing rounds the duration to 150 minutes. That puts the upcoming sequel below Dune (2021), which ran for 155 minutes, and Dune: Part Two (2024), which had a runtime of 166 minutes.

Dune: Part Three Runtime Compared With Earlier Films

The reported runtime means Villeneuve’s final chapter will be around five minutes shorter than the first film and nearly 16 minutes shorter than Dune: Part Two. While the difference may seem modest, it marks a shift for a franchise known for its expansive world-building, large-scale battles and deliberate storytelling.

The runtime also differs from an earlier 140-minute listing that appeared during advance ticket sales. The newer classification information places the film closer to the length of the original Dune, rather than suggesting a substantially shorter finale.

Story Moves Beyond Paul Atreides’ Rise to Power

Dune: Part Three adapts Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, moving the story forward nearly two decades after Paul takes control of the Imperium. Now emperor, Paul faces the consequences of his rise as political conspiracies, betrayal and a galaxy-wide holy war threaten the future he can foresee.

The film is expected to explore a darker period in Paul’s life, with Chani remaining central to the emotional and political conflict. Villeneuve has co-written the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan, while Linus Sandgren serves as cinematographer.

Returning Cast and Release Date

Chalamet returns as Paul, alongside Zendaya as Chani. The cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa and Robert Pattinson.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 18, 2026, where it will open on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday. More than an hour of the film is expected to be presented in IMAX, giving audiences an expansive big-screen experience despite the shorter runtime.

For fans, the runtime offers an early indication of the scale of Villeneuve’s final chapter. Rather than matching the length of Part Two, the trilogy closer appears set to deliver its conclusion in a more compact format—while still returning to the political and personal consequences of Paul’s reign.
